The theme this month for our Social Skills Training Program is Reflections in the New Year.
Underlying Principle:
As 2018 ends and a new year begins, we start to reflect on the memories made the previous year and set out resolutions for 2019. A resolution is a promise to yourself that you will make serious effort towards something that you should do. This month we want to teach our clients to take the time to reflect on who they are and the decisions they have made. In addition, we want our clients to consider who they want to be in the new year and to set goals to help them improve upon their skills.
Targeted Skills: Self-Awareness, Perspective Taking, Coping and Conversation
Here are a few examples of the activities we will feature this month:
New Year Reflections: This activity is a conversation game consisting of a wheel of New Year’s Reflection conversation starters. Utilizing a spinner surrounded by a variety of questions, we will read aloud the question the spinner points to and clients will take turns answering it.
All the Pieces of Me: This activity is designed help the individual become more aware of themselves by identifying the different characteristics that make them unique. Each person is expected to consider how others feel about them and set personal social skills goals that aim to help others get to know them better.
Behavior Reflections: This activity is designed to help the individual learn about problem solving, coping and perspective taking by breaking down a previous situation and reflecting on their behavior. Some of the questions involved in analyzing the previous situation are:
- What was the problem?
- Who or what caused the problem?
- How did you feel when the problem occurred?
- Did your reaction help solve the problem and make the situation better?
And so on through additional questions.
We hope everyone is ready for a wonderful new year!
