The theme for April in our Social Skills Training Program is Social Egg-spectations.
Underlying Principle:
Social expectations play a big role in shaping a person’s behavior, thought patterns and relationships with others. They help us to make assumptions about and respond to different circumstances. The more our clients know about what is expected of them in different social settings, the more successful they will be with each peer interaction.
Targeted Skill:
Perspective-taking, expected/unexpected behaviors, whole body listening
Here are examples of some of the activities we will be doing this month:
Social Egg Hunt:
Clients and their parents can work together during a social egg hunt. Each egg will contain a piece of paper with a scenario. For each egg they find, a scenario will be read and it is up to the client to decide what they would do in that situation.
People Watching:
We will sit with our client at a park or public place and observe what others are doing and explain the expected behaviors for that location. Then, we will compare our observations with the observations the child makes. This provides the child natural opportunities to learn and demonstrate their skills.
Me and My Peeps:
Every time we see someone, we remember how they make us feel and learn something new about them. We can store the new information in our People Files and use it at a later time. We will have our client write down things they know or learn about their “peeps”.
- They can add new information every time they see the person.
- They can write down facts.
- They can use the information to start conversations.
