In keeping with the spirit of the holiday season, both our SSTP and Floortime programs will highlight family, giving and sharing.
Social Skills Training Program – The Gift of Family
The holidays are not just about the gifts, but it is also about spending time with family and enjoying this time with loved ones. The targeted skills this month are Others-Perspective Taking, Initiation and Nonverbal Clues.
Following are a few examples of the activities:
Thinking about the Family
Have the child talk about things they like to do with each family member as well as what they like to do. We help the child draw a picture of herself and a family member doing an activity that they both enjoy. Sharing personal stories with friends and others is a great way to bond and build relationships.
Emotions Scrapbooking
Look through magazines to find pictures with expressive faces. Cut them out and make a feeling collage. Label each photo with the emotion shown on the person’s face. We talk about what makes us and the child feel the emotion depicted.
Family/Friend Chart or Tree
Make a family/friend chart or tree using photos or drawings. Attach the photo or drawing of the family member or friend and write his or her name and some things he or she likes. The child can do interviews with the people to gain information. If needed, the specialist will assist with a script of various questions for family and friends.
Floortime Theme: Holidays
The holidays are a time to celebrate time spent with families and loved ones.
Examples of activities include:
- Create ornaments out of construction paper and find a peer to share/exchange the ornaments.
- Print and decorate pictures related to the holiday season.
- Have the child choose someone to make a card for (friend, siblings, parents or specialist).
We wish everyone a wonderful holiday season!
