The theme for February in our Social Skills program explores kindness, friendships, and boundaries. Our team will place an emphasis on how we can show our love for our family and friends. By teaching clients how to express their love to others, they will learn skills to help them build positive relationships. It is also important to discuss boundaries others may have (i.e., personal space, providing too much personal information, etc.), which impacts our behaviors.
Targeted Skills: Friendship skills, perspective-taking, conversation skills, empathy, problem-solving
Examples of Activities:
Valentine’s Day Situation Cards
Read each card aloud and discuss the expected reactions. Clients will use their problem-solving skills to navigate each situation. Clients can also create their own scenarios and use the same process to work through various reactions.
Valentine’s Day Scavenger Hunt:
We will organize a Scavenger Hunt to encourage clients to get moving and interact with others. In-center clients can collaborate with peers from different groups, while at-home clients can enjoy the activity with their families, fostering interaction and connection in a fun and engaging way.
“I Care About You” – Say It or Show It?
This activity encourages individuals to consider meaningful ways to express care for others. We will explore various situations where we can demonstrate or communicate care while respecting individual boundaries.
These are just a few of the activities we will be working on with our clients this month.
In keeping with the Valentine’s Day theme, our Spirit Day this month will celebrate friendship. We encourage staff and clients in all programs to wear something pink or red on Friday, February 14th.
