Our Social Skills Training Program is highlighting Love and Friendship in February. Valentine’s Day is perfect for several of the activities this month.
Theme: Friendship Skills
Underlying Principle: Teach our clients simple and fun skills to build confidence that can be used to break the ice when meeting new people.
Here are a few example activities we will feature in developing friendship skills.
Friendly Greetings
Practice greeting others with a warm smile, a friendly head nod, or a verbal “hi.” If the child is not comfortable with this, model these behaviors while he/she observes.
Valentine’s Day Project
Interview a friend and create a portrait of that friend. Include the things your friend likes in the portrait.
Choosing Friends
Practice observing other kids at the park with the child. Help him/her observe and find a child who might have the same interests. This activity will build observation skills and lessen the chance of rejection by kids he/she approaches.
Design Your Own Valentine
Take the time to celebrate those in your life who hold a special place in your heart. Make him/her a card.
We wish everyone a wonderful Valentine’s Day!
