The theme in our Social Skills Training Program in November is all about giving thanks.
Theme: It’s nice to say, “Thank you!”
Underlying Principle:
Being thankful is a win-win situation – it makes the people you’re showing thanks for feel good and it helps to build positive thinking and awareness of the good things in the child’s life.
Targeted Skills:
Expected/Unexpected Behaviors (Social Rules), Thinking of others, Expressive Language
Examples of Activities:
Role Playing Scenarios working with the Specialist
Giving Thanks: Write a list of what you and the child are thankful for. Be sure to include the reasons why you are thankful for each other. Share the list with each other and the family. You can also do this activity verbally.
Verbal Ping-Pong: Small-talk at parties is a type of verbal ping-ping in that usually consists of back and forth questions and answers about what’s new or what’s going on at the party (the food, the weather). Play conversation/small talk ping-pong with the child to see how many verbal exchanges he/she can carry out.
Helping the Host: When you have a dinner party at your house, assign the child a role for helping out. Have him/her set the table, greet the guest, or clean up before or after the party. Help him/her complete the task by providing prompts or supports and praise the client for helping out.
Giving Back: Discuss ways we can give back. Let the client share how he/she will like to give back to others. Great opportunity to for stepping into other people’s shoes and being aware of and grateful for the things that we have.
Those are just some of the activities our specialists will use with our clients. We wish everyone a wonderful November and Happy Thanksgiving
