In November both SSTP and Floortime programs focus around Thanksgiving.
Social Skills Training Program Theme: Thanks for your Gratitutde
Thanksgiving is around the corner and all month long we want to promote gratitude and appreciation for people in our lives and all the great things we have. The activities below aim to help the child really stop to think about what is important to them and to think about how they show their gratitude.
Some examples of the activities:
Giving Thanks (a conversation activity): Have an open discussion with our client about what is means to appreciate something and what gratitude is. We talk about what we and that client appreciate and are grateful for. Next, we discuss ways that the client is currently showing appreciation and gratitude and new ways that they can display these same ideas.
Gratitude Scavenger Hunt: Gratitude is all about being thankful and focusing on the good around us. When you learn to be thankful for everything and have an attitude of gratitude, you’ll feel more positive, peaceful and happy each and every day. This Gratitude Scavenger Hunt is perfect for kids and adults to start finding little things to be thankful for. This will be fun!
Gratitude Game: Did you ever play the game Pick-up Sticks as a kid? This is a homemade version of Pick-up Sticks, with a twist. With this game, each time you pick up a stick you have to name something you are grateful for. Each color represents a different type of thing. It’s a great way to get the kids really thinking in different ways about all that they can be grateful for!
Floortime Program: Thanksgiving
It’s important for the child to understand that this is a holiday about giving thanks and being thankful for any and every little thing.
Some examples of activities:
Turkey Craft: Each child will trace their hand to create a turkey. Each finger represents a turkey feather. The child can write on each feather and share what they are thankful for.
Thank You: Each child will be asked to say thank you to someone in the room – it can be for something as simple as someone opening the door for them or sharing a item with them.
We wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving holiday!
