Our theme for December in the Social Skills Training Program is A Season of Giving.
Underlying Principle:
The Holiday season is an exciting time of giving and receiving gifts. However, there is much more to gifts this time of year. We teach our clients the importance of thinking of others and coping when something does not go our way.
Targeted Skills: Perspective-taking, coping skills, communication skills, social behaviors
Examples of Activities:
Trimming Santa’s Beard:
We encourage our client to think of others by demonstrating an act of kindness. The child will write a list of acts of kindness they will practice with others. Every time they complete something off their list, they get to trim it off from Santa’s beard!
Christmas Social Cards:
To target perspective-taking, our therapist and the child can read a social card and have the child identify a problem for that scenario. And, we will have the child use their problem-solving skills by coming up with possible solutions.
Coping Skills Stocking:
We allow the child to decide what coping skills they would like to use to self-regulate when something does not go their way. The child can cut out the coping skills they prefer or write in coping skills they come up with and add them to their social skills stocking!
Wishing everyone a wonderful holiday season!
