It’s that time of year again and both our Floortime and Social Skills Programs will be focusing on the holidays this month.
In the Floortime Program our clients will be supported by the Specialists to prepare for this Holiday Season. There will be a variety of arts and craft activities provided for clients to channel their creativity. Conversations will be promoted to talk about past experiences, family traditions, or future plans for this year.
Our Social Skills Program will emphasis that the holiday season is not just about gifts, but it is also about spending time with family and enjoying time with loved ones.
Here are a few sample activities we have planned and you can also do at home.
Thinking about the Family:
Talk about things you like to do with each family member as well as what they like to do. Help the child draw a picture of herself and a family member doing an activity that they both enjoy. Model telling stories about family members and events. Sharing personal stories with friends and others is a great way to bond and build relationships.
A Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words:
Pull out the family photo album and talk about activities that you did together and how you and everyone in the photo felt. This is a great way to practice reading non-verbal social cues.
Family/Friend Tree:
Make a family/friend chart or tree using photos or drawings. Tape or glue photo or drawing of family member or friend and under the photo write his or her name and some things he or she likes. Conduct interviews with the people if needed to gain information. If appropriate, write a script of what to ask (e.g. “what are your favorite things to eat?, “what’s your favorite color?”) This is a great way to practice thinking of others – perspective taking.
We wish everyone a wonderful holiday season! Stay safe and enjoy family and friends.
