2017

“New year, new feels, new chances, same dreams, fresh starts.”

We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and started off 2017 with a bang! Many of our clients have resumed school and transitioned back to their routines. Currently, at the center, we are in the process of preparing for Chinese New Year/Lunar New Year (“Spring Festival”), which lands on Saturday, January 28th. It is quite different from America’s traditional New Year. The date is based on the Chinese lunar calendar. This year, is the year of the rooster, which is the 10th Chinese zodiac animal. During the New Year, our clients may have a difficult time with the loud noises from crowds. Here are a few things to take note of:

  • Know the types of sensitivity: children have various levels of sensitivity to noise.
  • Provide relief: bring some handy headphones or earplugs to reduce noise level in the community.
  • Allow control over some sounds: if your child does not like sounds such as bells, slowly introduce him/her to engage with different kinds of bells, and allow him/her to experiment with them in the home.
  • Allow distractions: bring an iPad or highly desired play item (i.e., favorite stuff toy).
  • Gradually increase exposure and proximity: show your child pictures of items that make sounds, watch videos, and take trips to see/hear the sounds in the community.
  • Alternate between noisy and quiet: take frequent breaks (i.e., group time vs. 1 to 1 time).
