Getting Ready For School

It’s that time of year again! Our clients are preparing to go back to school and our Social Skills program will focus on encouraging friendship skills and play.

Underlying Principle: It is important for our clients to be prepared for school and understand what social skills are and how to use them.

Targeted Skills: Making Initiations, Cooperative Play, Self-Regulation

Sample Activities with our Specialists:

Make a Group Poster:

All about Us. Art materials pencils, markers, crayons, other materials will be provided. By limiting the number of each art item, clients will learn to share and take turns using the specific pencils, crayons, etc.  Specialists will acknowledge the skills each client is demonstrating and provide reinforcement such as Nice sharing! Excellent Waiting for your turn!

The Key to Being a Good Friend:

We will discuss what it means to be a good friend. How is someone else a good friend? We will use a worksheet for each client to use and show how they are a friend.

Parents:

Here are just a few tips for parents to help prepare your child at home:

  • Talk to your child about what they can expect when heading back to school.
  • Use a calendar to keep track of how many days there are before the start of school. This will be a reminder of when the new school year begins.
  • Tour the school to become familiar with the classrooms, gym, lunch room, library, play ground, etc.
  • Create a daily routine outline at home with an earlier start time and practice that routine prior to the start of the school year.

We hope everyone enjoys the last month of summer vacation and is excited to welcome the new school year!
