Social Communication

Our Social Skills Training Program will feature a variety of activities this month incorporating social communication.

Social communication is the use of language in social contexts. It includes the use and understanding of a variety of skills: taking the perspective of others, using verbal and nonverbal communication. Social communication behaviors (such as eye contact, facial expressions, and body language) are influenced by sociocultural and individual factors (Curent on & Justice, 2004; Inglebret, Jones, & Pavel, 2008). Keep in mind, social communication can be accomplished in a variety of ways. (verbal, ASL, PECS, AADC device, nonverbal cues etc.)

Targeted Skills: Perspective Taking, Turn Taking, Conversation and Social Cues

Sample Activities:

Dubbing

Turn on the television or look up movie clips on YouTube. Mute the video and add in your own dialogue based on the video content and body language.

Conversation Games

  • 2 Truths and a Lie
  • Would You Rather?
  • Conversation Maze

Gestures

Play a game in silence and use only gestures and eye contact to communicate throughout the game.

Virtual Charades

When you take classic charades into the online space, you’ll discover some advantageous abilities. For one, you can mute the actor so they can’t cheat when they get desperate and try to bolster their body language with spoken language.

May is the time to celebrate Mother’s Day and we have many different ideas for our clients to help make it a very special day. We also honor and remember our fallen heroes on Memorial Day with various activities for our clients to learn more about this holiday.

Happy Mother’s Day and enjoy the beautiful month of May.
