SSTP June Theme: Empathy

Empathy, the ability to understand and share the feelings of others, is a core skill we are focusing on this month in our Social Skills program. Through guided activities, we aim to help clients recognize emotions in others and better understand the reasons behind those feelings. Just as importantly, we work on developing appropriate and supportive responses in real life situations.

To build these skills, we use a combination of visual prompts and real world scenarios that encourage perspective taking and emotional awareness.

Here are two of the key activities we will be exploring:

Differing Perspectives
Using a stressful or frustrating situation, we break down the experience from each participant’s point of view. This helps clients see how the same situation can be perceived in different ways, opening the door to thoughtful discussion and collaborative problem solving.

Role Play
Clients engage in role playing scenarios with peers, family members, or professionals. This hands on approach allows individuals to step into someone else’s shoes and experience situations from a new perspective. Afterward, we reflect on the emotions involved and discuss what felt challenging or meaningful during the exercise.

By practicing empathy in structured and supportive ways, we hope to help our clients build stronger connections and navigate social interactions with greater confidence and understanding.

May all of our paths be guided by empathy.
