Starting a New Year

For many people, the new year is a time of doing new things and setting goals. Although there continues to be limitations in place with how we interact with others, we can still help our clients and their families reach their social skills goals! Below are a few sample activities our Social Skills Training Program specialists will encourage our clients to do, and to add to the fun, have their parents or caregivers join too!

Show and Tell:

We will ask our client to choose something new to share during the session. This may be a new toy they got for Christmas or simply a new talent or skill they have learned. Since the new year is a time for new beginnings, sharing something new helps visually represent that. This activity helps create opportunities for communication, whole body listening, assertiveness, etc.

Discussion Time:

We will spend time checking in with our clients and ask them to share a memorable moment from 2020. Discuss what made that moment memorable and what we can do to have more moments like that in the new year.

YouTube Music Playlist:

Music is a great way to help our clients get in a good mood and be positive when attempting new things. We will spend some time helping them create their own playlists to be in a positive mood! It is a top priority for all of us to keep in mind that although a song may sound positive, the lyrics may not be appropriate for the individual. All songs will be previewed before presenting to our clients.

Time Capsule:

Clients can fill out a Time Capsule worksheet to record their current favorites and later compare their responses to their future favorites.

We are looking forward to a wonderful New Year!
