Getting to Know Others

The theme for September in our Social Skills Program is Getting To Know Others.

As our kids continue to adjust to the new school year, most of them are attempting to form new friendships. Regardless if we are kids/teens in school or adults navigating the real world, it takes time and effort to get to know our peers and form meaningful relationships. This month we want to encourage everyone to practice getting to know others.

One of the activities we will utilize is:

Trading information
One of the most important parts of a friendship is the ability to carry on a conversation. Having a conversation involves trading information which is the natural dialogue that occurs between two people when they’re getting to know one another. The most important goal of sharing information is to find common interests so that you can find out if there are things you might enjoy talking about or doing together.

The steps for trading information are:
1) Ask the person about themselves
2) Answer your own questions
3) Find common interest
4) Share the conversation

Let’s get started with a variety of great questions to ask in order to learn more about someone:

  • If you could have any pet what would it be?
  • If you could have any superpower, which would you
    choose and why?
  • If you could change your name, what name would
    you choose?
  • Do you have a nickname?
  • What is your favorite thing to do at recess?
  • What is your favorite book?
  • What is your favorite breakfast food?
  • What advice would you give to someone a year
    younger than you?
  • What’s your favorite movie?
  • Who is your role model?
  • If you could only eat one thing for dinner for the
rest of your life, what would it be?

It’s always fun to get to know someone better!
