Appreciation and Kindness

November is the month we celebrate Thanksgiving and put our attention on gratitude. Our Social Skills Training Program will focus on how we can show appreciation and kindness to others.

Underlying Principle:
Being kind to others is not only an expected behavior, but it can help set off a chain reaction. By modeling acts of kindness, others may be more inclined to do the same!

Targeted Skills: Perspective-taking, social cues, conversation skills

Sample Activities

Acts of Kindness Calendars
We will provide our clients and their families with a calendar filled with daily ideas on acts of kindness. A few of the ideas are: helping someone with their chores, give someone a hug, draw a picture for someone, donate toys, smile at someone you encounter.

Thanksgiving Day Expected Behaviors
For example, it is expected to stay at the dinner table while everyone eats, eat small bites, offer to help clean up, and greet others.

Appreciation Prompts
We will assist our clients in expressing what they are grateful for with a series of questions. For example, who are the people who bring you joy, what is a favorite place you like to go, etc.
