Getting Ready for School

The theme for August in our Social Skills Training Program is Getting Ready for School: Encourage Friendship Skills and Play.

Underlying Principle:

Getting ready to start the new school year, it is important to be prepared. It is also a good idea to understand what social skills are and why using them is important.

Targeted Skills:

Making initiations, Cooperative play, Self-Regulation

Examples of Activities:

Greeting game: For this activity, clients in the group take turns going around the circle and saying “Hi” or client’s practice what they say when meeting someone. Specialist will provide support and reinforcement.

Make a Group Poster: All about US. Art materials pencils, markers, crayons, other materials will be provided. By limiting the number of each type of supply, the group is required to practice sharing or taking turns. Specialist will acknowledge skills the client is demonstrating and provide reinforcement: Nice sharing! Excellent Waiting for your turn!

Keys to Being a Good Friend:

Specialist will discuss with client’s what qualities they look for in a friend. How are they a good friend?

Cooperative Construction:

Work as a team to build a LEGO/block structure. When clients create something together they must communicate, negotiate and coordinate. As a team they can share their work with other groups.

These are just a few of the activities we will focus on for the month of August.
