Halloween Tricks and Tips

Our Social Skills Training Program will focus on Halloween this month with the theme of Tricks and Tips for Better Treats.

Underlying Principle:
Halloween is a time of dressing up and spooky fun. We want to teach our children how to be creative and have fun while being safe. Our staff will highlight activities designed to increase an individual’s awareness of their surroundings and social expectations.

Targeted Skills: Safety awareness, emotions, nonverbal cues

Sample Activities:

Role-playing scenarios

By incorporating role-playing, children will learn how to respond to safety challenges in a controlled environment.  Here are a few scenarios we will address:

  • What if the child is afraid of another person’s costume?
  • What if the candy is open or seems tampered with?
  • What if the child is afraid of the dark? What are some options?
  • What if the child is invited inside a house?

Detective

We will look at people in costumes or photos of people in costumes to help the child determine how they feel and what they might say (example: how does the witch feel and what does she say?) We will encourage our clients to use what they already know about the character to make smart guesses about their feelings and how they express themselves.

Those are just a few examples of the activities we will work on during October. It’s a fun time to enjoy the Halloween season with understanding, awareness and fun.

We wish everyone a fantastic Halloween! Stay safe and enjoy.
